Neutron
Scattering at ANSTO - Neutrons Are Amazing!
Neutron Scattering Education
They are only 1/1000th the size of the smallest atom,
and they can easily travel through centimetres of solid steel. They
can even measure the tiny vibrations of an atom. Of all experimental
methods, neutrons are the only accurate way to measure the position
of hydrogen atoms---the most common atom found in all living things
including you! Neutrons are also flying magnets able to tell which
direction a magnetic atom (like iron) is pointing. Because
of this, neutrons are essential for solving many important scientific
problems.
For a brief description of the neutron scattering instruments select "How
does ANSTO use neutrons?"
